Employee Affective Commitment In The Gig Economy: The Role of Technology Quality, Organizational Support, and Fairness

Gig economy has been growing rapidly and brings lots of opportunities as well as challenges. One of the challenges is employees’ affective commitment. Because of the nature of the gig economy, gig workers depend on the technology-enabled platform to finish their tasks. Therefore, their perception of the quality of the platform will affect how they perceive organizational support and fairness, which further affect their affective commitment. We surveyed 239 Uber drivers in Indonesia to test our model. The results showed that both information quality and system quality were positively associated with organizational support, and only information quality was positively associated with fairness. Both organizational support and fairness were positively associated with affective commitment. The further mediation tests showed that organizational support partially mediated the relationship between both information quality and system quality and affective commitment, while fairness partially mediated the relationship between information quality and affective commitment, and fully mediated the relationship between system quality and affective commitment. Limitations and managerial implications were also discussed in the study.
