Abstract: Institutional investors frequently coexist with powerful family owners who may prioritize consumption of private benefits. We investigate whether institutional owners who rank behind top family owners promote act as a countervailing force to dominant owners. Our evidence highlights differences in the role of institutional investors in family firms.
